Day 18 - Villarreal de Mazarife to Astorga

A strenuous day today. It is getting very hot again and there is no breeze. I am getting lots of miles done but it really hurts for the first couple of hours every day. My calf muscles are really big now and tighten up until I have gone through the pain barrier and out the other side,(about 8 or 9 miles), apparently the only way to fix this is to have three days rest or massage the muscles at night and before you start in the morning. I can't be bothered with the former and I keep forgetting to do the latter. It is great when the legs suddenly free up and away you go - like taking the handbrake off.
The scenery is very green now and I am entering into the mountains again. In a couple of days I reach the highest point on the Camino; Cruz de Ferro; at 1505m (4940 ft) and then I enter Galicia; the last and greenest of the Spanish regions on the Camino.
I am entering the area of fish, game and fruit. That means shops full of hanging hams, chorizo, cheeses, fish and chocolate. Apparently Astorga is famous for its chocolate production. Sorry Wendy, I can't bring you any home as it is too heavy, but I have eaten some and it is very good! (serves you right for eating all my Greek soft nougat!)
Loads of large green lizards now; they are very fast, so difficult to photograph but I have caught a few of the smaller ones warming in the sun, by the time you hear the big ones there is just a green flash and they are gone.

It is my son's birthday today; Happy Birthday Richard, wherever you are. If you are having half as much fun as me...
....then I am having twice as much fun as you!

Some photos for you.
Green fields, a railway track with no barriers on the Camino, some lizards, a huge water tower, a medieval bridge at the lovely village called Hospital de Orbigo, a bizarre mannequin by a cross and a lovely man called David who gives free drinks to pilgrims. (He was very popular today after the long, hot, uphill stretch to Astorga.) also some of the amazing buildings in Astorga (I am on the one behind the pilgrim statue)

  2. Might be worth a day or two's rest to let the calf muscles recover as it will only become harder when you hit the mountains again? Listen to your body. Seems it happens to young girls too?
    Question
What should i do if my calf muscles are big?
alot of my friends make jokes about how huge they are. my calf muscles isn't fat it is just huge muscles. i don't want them to be skinny and weak. but do you think it is unnatural for a girl, 13 1/2 years old to have enormous calf muscles. they literally look like a mans calf muscles. i am glad they are'nt small i just have always found it weird that they are huge.

i used to think it was because i used to play extreme soccer and football with my friends out in the fields.

I think dancers and girls who do ice skating have developed calves. Your friends are really not nice. We had various body types among friends, but never made remarks about it. That is not how to treat friends. Maybe, it is time to get new friends who aren't fixated on your legs. Ask them why they are so attracted to your legs and why not worry about their weak legs. If accosted, who will defend them. Just be sure, they can run away. You don't have to worry as you are strong. You will date, get married and have a good life. Your calves are totally irrelevant to your life to come, and need not be discussed by these girls. They think it is a joke, then joke about their defects, and see how they like it when it is turned around.
    Best wishes...Hayling Ralph

  3. Hi Ian, just back from holiday so I've had to read all your blogs in one go. How I've laughed! Particularly enjoyed your encounter with Stefan for obvious reasons!! Sounds like you're having an incredible experience there, makes me want to dust off my walking boots. Look forward to following the rest of your trip. Be safe and happy. love Kes xx

  4. Hi Ian,

I've managed to read all your blog in one go today. It's brilliant. Loved every minute of it and will now keep up to speed and get my fix daily. You sound so happy and chilled albeit in a bit of pain. But you know what they say "no pain, no gain". Maybe slow down a little rather than take a day out? 30miles in one day is a lot for any man. Anyway keep plodding along and writing your blog and sending in the pics. I loved reading it and want more!!!

    Lots of love

  5. Just enjoyed a catch up on your amazing adventure Ian. You should write a book - you're good! Totally impressed with the distances you are covering - when do we get the picture of you in new smaller shorts?!
Keep on doing what you're doing, Jax xxx

    1. Hi Jax, it is difficult for me to take picture of myself with my iPhone. I threw away a pair of my old shorts today and they keep following me!
